Citation Graves, W. S., et al. "Compact x-ray source based on burst-mode inverse Compton scattering at 100 kHz. The MIT Faculty has made this article openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters. A design for a compact x-ray light source (CXLS) with flux and brilliance orders of magnitude beyond existing laboratory scale sources is presented. The source is based on inverse Compton scattering of a high brightness electron bunch on a picosecond laser pulse. The accelerator is a novel high-efficiency standing-wave linac and rf photoinjector powered by a single ultrastable rf transmitter at X-band rf frequency. The high efficiency permits operation at repetition rates up to 1 kHz, which is further boosted to 100 kHz by operating with trains of 100 bunches of 100 pC charge, each separated by 5 ns. The entire accelerator is approximately 1 meter long and produces hard x rays tunable over a wide range of photon energies. The colliding laser is a Yb∶YAG solid-state amplifier producing 1030 nm, 100 mJ pulses at the same 1 kHz repetition rate as the accelerator. The laser pulse is frequency-doubled and stored for many passes in a ringdown cavity to match the linac pulse structure. At a photon energy of 12.4 keV, the predicted x-ray flux is 5 × 10 11 photons=second in a 5% bandwidth and the brilliance is 2 × 10 12 photons=ðsec mm 2 mrad 2 0.1%Þ in pulses with rms pulse length of 490 fs. The nominal electron beam parameters are 18 MeV kinetic energy, 10 microamp average current, 0.5 microsecond macropulse length, resulting in average electron beam power of 180 W. Optimization of the x-ray output is presented along with design of the accelerator, laser, and x-ray optic components that are specific to the particular characteristics of the Compton scattered x-ray pulses.

Compact Hard X-ray Source via Inverse Compton Scattering Based on the X-band Linac

We are designing a compact inverse Compton scattering hard X-ray (33 keV) source based on X-band linac. X-band 1.5and 3.5-cell photocathode RF guns and X-band linac were analyzed with PARMELA simulation, and X-ray flux was estimated for several types of lasers. The theoretical scaling law of the RF guns among charge, emittance, and RF wavelength is confirmed by PARMELA. The maximum RF field at ...

Laser Super Cavity

We are developing Laser Super Cavity for compact X-ray generator based on Inverse Compton Scattering with several tens MeV electron beam. The laser supercavity increases the laser power and makes small laser beam size at the collision point with the electron beam. A FabryPerot cavity as the laser supercavity has been tested at the KEK-ATF (Accelerator Test Facility) and the design for the incre...

The extended X - ray emission around HDF 130 at z = 1 . 99 : an inverse Compton ghost of a giant radio source in the Chandra Deep Field

One of the six extended X-ray sources found in the Chandra Deep Field North is centred on HDF 130, which has recently been shown to be a massive galaxy at z = 1.99 with a compact radio nucleus. The X-ray source has a roughly double-lobed structure with each lobe about 41 arcsec long, or 345 kpc at the redshift of HDF 130. We have analyzed the 2 Ms X-ray image and spectrum of the source and find...

Ultrahigh brilliance quasi-monochromatic MeV γ-rays based on self-synchronized all-optical Compton scattering

Inverse Compton scattering between ultra-relativistic electrons and an intense laser field has been proposed as a major route to generate compact high-brightness and high-energy γ-rays. Attributed to the inherent synchronization mechanism, an all-optical Compton scattering γ-ray source, using one laser to both accelerate electrons and scatter via the reflection of a plasma mirror, has been demo...

Inverse Compton X-ray Flare from GRB Reverse Shock

We study synchrotron self-inverse Compton radiation from a reverse-shocked fireball. If the inverse Compton process dominates the cooling of shocked electrons, an X-ray flare produced by the first order Compton scattering would emerge in the very early afterglow phase, with the bulk of the shock energy radiated in the second order scattering component at 10-100 MeV. The dominance of inverse Com...
